My Story

Hello! I’m new to this kind of thing but I want to share my journey with anyone who wants to get a better understanding of infertility or the IVF process. I am 37 and my husband is 34 (yes I’m a lucky woman J). We have been married for 6 years and have been trying to conceive ever since. We realized that we were having problems after about a year so we went to our first reproductive endocrinologist. The tests started. An HSG showed that I had a blockage in one of my fallopian tubes which the doctor opened up. Then the lil’ swimmers were tested and the numbers were low and they were somewhat morphed. We started eating better, exercising and both slowed down on the alcohol intake. Unfortunately, I lost my job and the fertility benefits that came along with it so we decided to continue to try on our own. About a year after that we went to see our current doctor. He was very honest with us and told us that a large factor in our infertility was being overweight. We had been looking into Gastric Bypass and we asked him what his feelings were on the topic. He said that he thought that it was a great procedure and has had some fantastic results. In fact there was a Bariatric Surgeon in the same office building that we had been considering talking to. He told us that this particular surgeon was excellent and he would operate with him any day of the week. When we left the office we went downstairs and signed up for the information class that they did on a monthly basis. Long story short we had the gastric bypass and after the requisite amount of time I had to wait (18 months) we started trying again. The current portion of our journey started in November 2009. We went back to see the endocrinologist that supported GBP. In his battery of tests he also performed an HSG and opened a fallopian tube. During that exam he found that I had intrauterine polyps. He scheduled me for surgery in December and those were removed. I checked and my insurance only covered IUI’s as a treatment for infertility. The coverage stopped at treatment though so we had to pay for the medications out of pocket. We decided that we could afford to try two cycles. We tried the 1st IUI in January and the second in March, neither worked. In June my husband’s company was bought out and to our surprise his new benefits covered more. They cover $5,000 per calendar year toward infertility treatment and a huge portion of the medication. After a lot of research and many telephone calls we made the decision to try IVF. We went back to the doctor and started the IVF journey…
